How to Prep for Your Family Photography Session
My goal with your family photography session is for you to have a relaxed, comfortable, fun experience (and get real, authentic photos that capture the true spirit and story of your family). With that in mind, here are a few tips to help you and your family prepare.
Get in the right mindset. Your session isn’t a chore to cross off your to-do list. It’s a time to slow down, be together and connect with your favorite people. Think of your photography session as a chance to have some uninterrupted family time - there just happens to be a nice lady with a camera there.
Feel good in what you are wearing. Here's a detailed blog post with my thoughts on what to wear. My overall advice is to be the best version of your everyday self. If you feel comfortable, you will look comfortable in the photos.
Let the kids know what’s happening. Prepare your kids by letting them know that a friend will be taking some pictures of your family. You can show them my photo so that I’m not totally unfamiliar to them when the session begins.
Have a mellow day. Don’t schedule too much activity on the day of your session. Make sure your children have rested and have had adequate snacks and water during the day.
Bring snacks. I recommend having a few easy snacks easily available. Dry, non-messy snacks work best. In my experience, gummy bears (or something similar) are always a hit.
Don’t stress. Please don't feel stressed about your child's behavior (before or during the session). Once you’re at our location, take a deep breath, relax, and get ready to have fun.
Get the most out of it. I encourage you to make a whole afternoon/evening of your session. Getting ice cream afterwards is strongly encouraged.
I hope these tips help you feel at ease and prepared leading up to the your photo session!
