Family Photos with Teens | La Jolla Family Photographer
I have a confession to make. The first time I booked a family photography session with teenagers, I was terrified. At the time, most of the families that I had been working with had children that were babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. I felt very much in my element with younger kids, and was totally worried that I wouldn’t be able to relate to teenagers at all.
Luckily, I was very, very wrong. Teenagers are a DELIGHT to photograph, and I’ve done lots of successful sessions with middle schoolers and high schoolers in the years since. Teenagers can be so much fun. In my experience, they are pretty open to laughing with their family, goofing around, and showing love to their parents and siblings (even if there is a bit of good-natured eye-rolling involved). And as a bonus, they follow directions really well!
Which brings me to another point… Family photography sessions shouldn’t stop when your kids get older. As their kids age out of the “little kid” years, I think a lot of families fall out of the habit of getting photos done consistently. But please don’t!
As the mom of a current- and a soon-to-be middle schooler, I know that it can feel challenging to get great photographs of your teens and tweens. But it’s really important to make sure they’re photographed as they grow during these years. They change SO MUCH during this time period, seemingly overnight, and you will want to make sure to remember exactly what they were like during this short window of time on the cusp of adulthood.
Here are some of my favorite moments from a recent beach session in La Jolla with teens and their parents. This gallery includes some photos taken with the iconic Windansea Surf Shack! Check out another Windansea Beach session (and more specifics about this location) here.
