Family Photography at Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad | San Diego Family Photographer

San Diego has such a variety of exquisite locations for family photography sessions. One of my favorite location options in North County is Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad. This charming spot is a protected ecological preserve and wetlands area. With easy, flat trails, it’s a great place to explore for families and nature lovers.

What I love about this location for photography sessions:

  • At close to 600 acres, Batiquitos Lagoon has a wide array of scenic backdrops, so photography galleries will have a nice variety of images. Given the size of the area, photo shoots are always easy and spacious, even if there are other photographers present.

  • I have rarely seen bad weather here (unless it’s actively raining). The day of this session was a bit cloudy (given that we shot during May Gray), but still beautiful. In fact, the cloud cover on a day like this acts like a large, natural softbox, giving nice, even lighting throughout the location.

  • It’s a great spot for families who want a coastal feel for their photos, without actually having to go to the beach. Sessions on the beach can sometimes feel like a hassle (parking, crowds, tide calendars, sand) — using Batiquitos Lagoon as your location will give your session a similar vibe.

  • It’s easy and convenient. Batiquitos Lagoon isn’t far off the freeway, has lots of nearby street parking, and is full of nice, flat walking paths — great for families with toddlers and preschoolers, and those who are using strollers.

  • What can I say… I love the purple flowers here, and make sure to include them in every session.

Outside of a family photography session, Batiquitos Lagoon is a fun spot to explore for easy hikes and family walks. You might even spot some cool wildlife!

Below are some of my favorite moments from a recent Batiquitos Lagoon session.

If you’re looking for a family photographer in the San Diego / Carlsbad area, I’d love to help you out!
