5 Tips for a Fun Family Photography Session
My family photography style is all about FUN. If you book a session with me, I want your photographs to feel full of joy. I want your laughter to burst from the frame. I want you to take time as a family to enjoy each other’s company and play together.
Here are 5 tips to having a fun family photography session:
Wear clothes you feel comfortable in
Not literally, but figuratively. Yes, I know you want to look good in your photos (I want that too!). No, I’m not talking about wearing your actual, comfortable loungewear for the session.
So what do I mean by “comfortable”? Wear clothes that you feel great in, that also make you feel like your best, most confident self (this goes for all members of the family). Also, be sure to wear clothes you can move around in. Avoid clothes that are ill-fitting, so tight they don’t allow movement, or shoes that are hard to walk in.
If you are feeling comfortable, physically and mentally, you will be in a much more relaxed mood and ready to enjoy yourself with your family.Location is everything
We’ll work together to pick the best location for your session. I have lots of local San Diego area recommendations, and one thing I always look for in a location is the chance to explore and play. If we’re at the beach, expect to climb on rocks and splash in the waves. At a park? We’ll definitely head to the playground. In a wooded area? We’ll pretend to be explorers and go on a hunt for wild animals.A great option for a fun location is always your family’s home, where we can plan a game or fun activity. Here are my thoughts on why at-home family photography sessions are amazing.
Get active
The most fun sessions always involve a ton of movement. I will avoid stiff, overly posed situations, and instead focus on movement and games (and probably some dancing). Come prepared to pick your kids up, swing them around, and toss them in the air!Stop worrying
I know that getting family photos done can feel stressful and a little awkward. You’ve had to pick outfits and schedule time during your busy schedules to make this happen. Maybe someone in your family is having a grumpy day.
Do. Not. Worry.
As Elsa would say, let it go, and leave the rest to me. I don’t care if your kids are acting a little wild - we’ll incorporate it and make it work. As a seasoned pro, I have a ton of tricks to engage everyone in the family and make sure they’re having a good time, so that you can focus on connecting with your family.Laugh at my jokes
I’m basically a twelve year old in a grown-up’s body, which means I will tell a lot of corny jokes. Please laugh at them (and feel free to share your own)!
I will also act completely silly with your kids. Anything to get those genuine belly laughs and keep them smiling throughout the session. I’ve learned through experience that if the kids are engaged and having fun, the parents will have a great time too.
And the best way to make sure your session is fun? Don’t worry about bedtime, and head out for ice cream immediately when we’re done.
